The origins of CEnet lay within a joint venture between the dioceses of Broken Bay, Wagga Wagga, and Wollongong which took the name CASTnet - Church Agencies and Schools Technology Network. The service was launched by Professor Gordon Stanley – President NSW Board of Studies at a special event in Wagga Wagga, November 2003. "CASTnet means that students are able to participate in the global benefits of education while being assured that their experience is developed & supported by values which spring from their Catholic tradition" - Prof Gordon Stanley 2003.
The network has evolved rapidly since 2003 and now includes additional connected sites across the broader northern and eastern sea board of Australia. Given the rapid growth in the number of schools involved in CEnet, a decision was made in late 2006 to form a company to procure, manage and guide the services of the network.
CEnet’s growth has been accompanied by a series of inter-diocesan curriculum projects and broad professional development programs for teachers. The addition of each new diocese to CEnet has also expanded the skill and experience base within the venture.
The infrastructure at the heart of the CEnet service is under constant review to support the growing capacity of some 700 plus schools and remote offices. The IT Services group continually evaluates a wide range of technologies that may be employed to enhance the network.
